In 1947, Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, and Dr. Kenneth Beebe founded the Association. For over 50 years it has been dedicated to honoring the accomplishments and achievements of outstanding individuals in our society who have succeeded in the face of adversity. The Association focuses strongly on encouraging young people to pursue their dreams with determination and perseverance.

The Association brings the “Horatio Alger Heroes” of today together with those of tomorrow by giving out the Horatio Alger Award annually to ten individuals. Each year, the Association hosts career, public service, and community service seminars, sponsors free-enterprise conferences, conducts internship programs and awards almost a million dollars in college scholarships.

Some of the previous awardees include: Dr. Robert Schuller, Gordon Moore, Maya Angelou, Colin Powell, H. Wayne Huizenga, Sam Walton, Ronald Reagan, Rich DeVos, Oprah Winfrey, Dave Thomas, Mary Kay Ash and Billy Graham.

The Association believes that the future of America lies in the hands of our youth. Each year college scholarships are awarded to high school seniors, who have already faced adversity in their short lives, yet have continued to achieve academic excellence and leadership.

The collegiate partners program works with over 120 colleges and universities to help make the Horatio Alger Scholars’ dream of a college education become a reality.

Horatio Alger Youth Seminars reach more than 85,000 students across America. These seminars allow our country’s youth to hear previous award winners live, one-on-one.

Each year, The Horatio Alger Awards are televised on prime time national television. The 1996 awards were hosted in Washington D.C. by CBS News Anchor Dan Rather.

The Horatio Alger Association’s Three Main Goals Are:

1. To recognize the modern-day “heroes” of American society.

2. To provide scholarship assistance to deserving young people.

3. To educate America’s youth about the limitless possibilities available to them through the free-enterprise system.

The inspiring mission of the Horatio Alger Association Of Distinguished Americans continues to work to help motivate America’s youth to believe in the beauty and possibilities of their very own dreams.
