confirm thy soul in self-control,
thy liberty in law!

in liberating strife,
who more than self their country loved,
and mercy more than life!

May God thy gold refine,
till all success be nobleness,

In 1893, Katherine Lee Bates, an English teacher at Wellesley College was inspired by the magnificence of Pike's Peak in our beautiful state of Colorado. Through the grace of God, she paid tribute to the people and places that had contributed to our country's greatness through her majestic hymn.
